Why instruct a lawyer ?

There are two principal reasons why people instruct a lawyer to handle their matter:

  1. The matter is complex, and you need an expert to handle it; and
  2. You understand the matter, but you are busy earning n income in your area of expertise being too busy to conduct the matter.

An example is my own case: My wife and I have owned 6 houses over the course of our marriage.

I have never done my own conveyancing. I could get out my old law books, study them for half a day and spend half a day doing the job. Or I could get a friend who specialises in property law who could do it in about an hour. I can earn far more in half a day then it would cost me to pay for the conveyancing.

Usually, it is a combination of these two reasons which leads to a client instructing a lawyer.
